CD REVIEW: BRITAN'S NEW BREAKOUT ACT 'JAKE BUGG'

Jake Bugg: A-

Jake Bugg is not your average British teenager.  For one thing, at just 18-years-old, is a frighteningly talented songwriter and has been called the British Dylan.

The new album ‘Jake Bugg,’ (Mercury Records), out on April 9th, is genuine and absolutely breathtaking from beginning to end. 'Lightning Bolt's swaggering indie-rock is reminiscent of Merseyside’s The Coral.  ‘Seen It All’ is a wry rebellious song with a very Libertines-esque abandon. This also exposes his love of '60s psych-folk. 'Seen It All' begins with Bugg dropping a pill ("Or maybe two") before crashing a party at a local gangster's house where "a friend took me aside, said 'everyone here has a knife'".

Balancing his rage and discontent of he previous are the soul wrenching tunes of a vulnerable and reflective soul. The disarming 'Simple As This' is exposes his proficiency with word play and introspective splendor.  “Tried absolution of the mind and soul, it only led me where I should not go. Oh and he answer well how could I miss, something as simple as this?”

The country-folk 'Note To Self' brings allows Bugg’s distinctive voice to stand out and while offering wisdom beyond his years. The slow tempo ‘Broken' is as stunning as it is haunting. This song leaves your mind in shams wondering how a tatty teenager can come up with such an emotive and ingenious ballad.  ‘Jake Bugg’ is brimming with wit and soul; the album is truly one of the best debuts of the 21s century.

It is no surprise Noel Gallagher has taken him under his wing, neither is the fact ha he’s opening up for Brit-pop legends the Stone Roses. Check out England’s new breakout act at this year’s Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.
