We can officially get
excited about MGMT’s next album. I mean their last one, Congratulations, came
out three years ago and was less than impressive.
One song was super rad but
the rest of it was all over the place and just bored me to death.
They had great collaborators
like Flaming Lips and all, but it sounded like too many hands handling drowned
their unique sound.
“People thought we took too
many drugs, which was not the case at all,” insists Goldwasser, taking a seat
on a studio couch. Adds VanWyngarden, “We were less naive after
Congratulations.”
Hopefully this time around
they DID do too many drugs and the outcome is one awesome album. Learn from
your mistakes dudes!
According to the article on
Rolling Stone, MGMT are getting even weirder on their follow-up, tentatively
due out in June.
Instead of using their live
band, as they did on Congratulations, the core duo recorded alone,
cherry-picking the best parts of their free-form jams to construct tracks that
reflect the Aphex Twin and house records they’ve been listening to lately. Says
Goldwasser, “We’re not trying to make music that everyone understands the first
time they hear it.”
That sounds vague, but
intriguing, I’ll deffo give it a listen.
