CHRIS CORNELL SAYS POP SUCKS!

Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell has bemoaned the state of contemporary pop music, claiming "it couldn't be any worse".

The American rocker called Adele "the one bright spot" in today's charts, but predicted that pop's decline will lead to another golden age for rock music. He told The Sun: "A big reason grunge became so big so fast is because people were so sick of what was out there. It's the same thing now. You have a better chance of a very healthy and vital rock scene coming out today because there's something to react against. Contemporary pop music couldn't be any worse than it is now."

However, Cornell admitted that Adele's success has restored his faith in record buyers, saying: "They're actually songs and she can really sing. So obviously the biggest market still responds to a human being creating music."

Seattle band Soundgarden, who reunited in 2010, are currently working on their first album of new material since 1996's 'Down On The Upside'. However, Cornell insisted that it will not be a "throwback", saying: "This album is every bit as vital as anything we've ever done." Describing the album's sound, he said: "It's new music available to a new rock audience, and the ultimate of what we could have achieved in trying to reach a new generation of rock fans is to give them something that's theirs."
